The 1400 series group was designed for Osaka Line, and it was developed as one of environmentally friendly trains as energy cost was a matter of concern amid the oil crisis. A few units were also introduced to Minami Osaka Line where track gauge is different from other main lines. Kintetsu later introduced various commuter trains that look very similar to the 1400 series group.

The 1400 series was introduced in 1981-84 with four four-carriage units in total.

The 1200 series was built in 1982-84, with 10 two-car units and a four-car unit in total. They have been used mainly for regional services in Nagoya area, and all but the four-car unit were converted to be compatible with driver-only operation, renamed 1201 series.

The 2050 series was introduced in 1983, and there are two three-car units. They were initially used for Osaka Line services, but they were reallocated to Nagoya area in 2012.

The 6600 series was designed for Minami Osaka Line network. Four two-car units were delivered in total.
