History

AE series is the fastest non-high-speed train in Japan capable of running at 160 km/h (100 mph). It was developed for Skyliner services connecting Ueno and Narita Airport, as Narita Sky Access Line was opened. According to the company the AE series made the journey time between Ueno and Narita Airport Terminal 1 to 43 minutes, 15 minutes shorter than before. It is said that their seating is designed for short-time use, and it could be stressful if seated for more than an hour.

The company introduced another unit in 2019 as more foreign tourists than ever were expected to visit Japan during the Olympics, which was apparently unsuccessful due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

They are used for Skyliner (Ueno - Narita Airport), as well as Morning Liner and Evening Liner (Ueno - Keisei-Narita).
