History
The 800 series was the last train on the Keikyu network with four sets of doors per carriage. It also had traditional and distinctive features such as single doors and a front end with only one headlight. The series initially formed of three coaches and they were introduced to express and stopping services. All units consisted of six coaches by 1986 by either inserting three intermediate carriages or simply combining two units. There was no gangway so that the 800 series could not run the underground.
They were painted red and white at first, but the livery was slightly changed to red with white bands in 1982-84. They had been used mainly for stopping services on Keikyu Main Line. After Haneda Airport International Terminal station (now Terminal 3 station) opened in 2010, the trains became unable to enter Airport Line because of platform edge doors.
They were gradually replaced with 1000 series since 2011. Since they were incompatible with platform edge doors, Keikyu withdrew all units in 2019, earlier than planned. Currently a three-car unit has been stored at Kurihama maintenance depot, but it is not certain whether if it is preserved or not.
Photos
Each of the first five six-car units consisted of a pair of three-car units. Therefore, the third and fourth coaches looked different (see air-conditioning on the roof).
Until the early-2010s, the 800 series was sometimes used on extra limited-express services in summer.
The 23rd unit was restored to the original livery in 2016, and it remained until the very end of the series.
