History
MoBo 301 series was introduced in 1971 as modern trams were necessary to improve services. The body design was so successful that Keifuku later used the same bodies to rebuild MoBo 101 series. The MoBo 301 series was the last brand new train with a trolley pole, though it was replaced with a pantograph four years later.
Two MoBo 301 series were initially used on the entire network just like others. They have looked almost identical to the MoBo 101 series when the 101s were dramatically refurbished in 1975. They were withdrawn in 2007, but No. 301 was reinstated a year later as Kyoto City Subway Tozai Line was extended to Uzumasa Tenjingawa and a new station was added to Keifuku's network.
Keifuku has repainted almost all trams purple since 2010, but No. 301 still retains its original livery.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The MoBo 301 series runs Arashiyama Main Line, mostly during rush hours and when it is very busy at weekends. It is effectively designated as a spare tram so that it is often stored at a depot. Keifuku will introduce new trains in financial years 2023-26, replacing all MoBo 101 and 301 series.
