History
Izukyu 8000 series was converted from Tokyu 8000 series and 8500 series. Tokyu 8500 series was first introduced in 1969 and introduced to Den-en-toshi, Oimachi and Toyoko Lines (including through-services towards Minatomirai Line). Tokyu withdrew all 8000 series trains by 2008, and a few were exported to Indonesia.
44 8000 series carriages and an 8500 series carriage were transferred from its parent company, Tokyu. These trains were refurbished with a toilet. Izukyu 8000 series entered service in 2005, replacing 200 series (ex-JNR 113 series and 115 series) and some 2100 series.
The 8000 series was reintroduced gradually until 2008. Each unit initially consisted of two or four coaches, but they were soon rearranged to three coaches. Withdrawal commenced in 2022 following introduction of 3000 series.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 8000 series is used for stopping services on the entire Izu Kyuko Line and through-services towards Ito Line (i.e. between Atami and Izukyu-shimoda). As most remaining carriages are approximately 50 years old, the company plans to replace them with the 3000 series.
