History

The 1000 series was intrduced by Enoshima Kamakura Sightseeing Co. Ltd. (in other words, before the company changed its name to what we know today). At that time, Enoden trains were mostly old-fashioned, and the company concluded that brand new trains were essential to modernise services. The 1000 series was the first brand new train in nearly 50 years at the time of introduction.

There are several groups of the 1000 series, and this article classifies them into three: variants 1000 (original), 1200 and 1500. The variant 1200 has a different front end, especially headlights, making it modern compared to the original style. The variant 1500 looks the same as the 1200s, but traction, motors and bogies are different.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

There are six units in service, and it is the largest number on Enoden. However, one or two units of the variant 1000 (original) are likely to be withdrawn in a few years as maintenance staffs are struggling to deal with out-of-date traction.
