History

This article is about JR West KiHa 189 series (diesel). Do not be confused with JNR 189 series (electric).

The KiHa 189 series is a type of diesel train for Limited Express Hamakaze (Osaka - Tottori via Bantan Line). It was introduced following track improvement work on San-in Main and Bantan Lines, replacing KiHa 181 series. Each unit is formed of three coaches, and capable of running at 130 km/h (81 mph). Unlike ugly-designed KiHa 187 series, the KiHa 189 series resembles its predecessor, the KiHa 181 series.

In 2024, a three-car unit was dramatically refurbished and named Hanaakari ("hana" means flower, "akari" means light). All three coaches are first class, and one of them has "Superior Green Car" seating.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

The KiHa 189 series is mostly used for Limited Express Hamakaze (Osaka - Tottori via Bantan Line), but also for few Biwako Express (Osaka to Kusatsu). Hanaakari runs mainly during high seasons in various places in western Japan.
