History
The 273 series is a type of limited express train specifically designed for Yakumo (Okayama - Izumoshi), replacing 40-year-old 381 series introduced by Japanese National Railways. The 273 series is a tilting train that allows running tight curves faster than other trains. According to JR West, the 273 series "significantly" reduced risk of motion sickness by "23%" with advanced computer-controlled bogies and tilting features. Each unit is formed of four coaches, and two units can be coupled together to form an eight-car service.
Its body is based on that of 287 series. The 273 series is painted bronze and ivory, and it may look very different depending on time and weather. Seats on standard class coaches are as large as those on bullet trains. Green Car (first class) is also available. In addition, there are a few "semi-compartments" for groups of two or four people.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 273 series has been used for Limited Express Yakumo since April 2024. There are just 11 four-car units, apparently not enough to replace 62 old trains. JR West may order more to completely replace the 381 series.
