History

The 271 series was developed for Limited Express Haruka (Kyoto - Kansai Airport). As the number of inbound visits has surged, JR West decided to rearrange all Haruka services from six to nine coaches. All 271 series units are formed of three coaches with standard-class seating only, and they always used together with 281 series.

The design of the 271 series is based on that of 287 series, but the livery is the same as that of the 281 series to avoid confusion. The 271 series can run the Naniwasuji Line, a new railway that runs through the heart of Osaka.

The 271 series entered into service in March 2020, but all units were taken out of service in less than three weeks due to a dramatic decline in demand caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. They were stored at depots for nearly a year, and all units were finally reinstated in August 2023.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

As mentioned above, the 271 series is used for Limited Express Haruka (mainly Kyoto - Kansai Airport) together with the 281 series. Since the 271 series is designed to be compatible with the Naniwasuji Line (due to open in 2031), the company may introduce more units to replace the 281 series in the future.

Hello Kitty pictures were added to all units shortly before entering into service in 2019, but they have gradually been removed since 2025.
