History
The 5000 series is a type of suburban train for Honshi-Bisan Line (also known as Seto-Ohashi Line). It is based on JR West 223 series (standard class) and JR East E217 series (first class, or Green Car). Six units have been used on Rapid Marine Liner (Okayama - Takamatsu) since the introduction.
Each unit of the 5000 series is formed of three coaches. The front coach (Takamatsu side) is a double-decker, and the upper level is designated as Green Car. The lower level is standard class, but seat reservation is required. There are also four seats just behind the cab, which are called "Panorama Seat" that provide magnificent view when heading Takamatsu. These four seats are also regarded as a part of Green Car, but nobody should use them on trains towards Okayama unless there is a compelling reason.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 5000 series is exclusively used on Rapid Marine Liner (Okayama - Takamatsu). Each 5000 series is formed of three coaches as mentioned above, but most services are formed of five or seven coaches with JR West's 223 series.
