History
The 731 series is the first commuter train that JR Hokkaido introduced, to ease congestion during peak hours in Sapporo area. Unlike 711 series and 721 series, the 731 series trains have no enclosed vestibule and transverse seating. Each unit is formed of three coaches, and can be coupled to the 721 series, 733 series and 735 series. The most important feature of the series is the compatibility with diesel trains: a 731 series unit can couple with a KiHa 201 series unit.
Its successors (733 series and 735 series) are based on the design of the 731 series trains.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 731 series trains are currently operated on Chitose, Hakodate Main, Muroran Main and Sassho Lines, mostly in Sapporo area. They often form six coaches with other types mentioned above. During peak hours, the 731 series and the KiHa 201 series form six coaches, which is the only case that electric and diesel trains are coupled with.
