History
The KiHa E200 series is a type of the first hybrid-diesel multiple unit in the world (excluding experimental trains and those not for passenger service). Its design is based on that of KiHa E130 series, but the KiHa E200 series has two sets of doors. Three carriages were introduced in 2007, and all of them are double-ended.
Its engine generates power, and the train runs with motors. Batteries are installed on the roof. JR East carried out experiments and tests to develop more hybrid-diesel trains, which later introduced several types to other lines such as HB-E210 series for the Senseki-Tohoku Line.
The interior design is not different to other diesel trains for rural railways. Seats are a mixture of transverse and longitudinal ones, and there is an acessible toilet. All three carriages are compatible with driver-only operation.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The KiHa E200 series is used on the entire Koumi Line in accordance with fixed timetables, and all regular services are formed of two coaches. JR East named them Koumi, but they are usually not called so these days.
