History

This article is about JR East KiHa E120 series. Do not be confused with JR West KiHa 120 series.

The KiHa E120 series is a type of double-ended suburban diesel train, first introduced to Niigata area. It looks almost identical to KiHa E130 series, but the KiHa E120 series has two sets of door per carriage. They were used on Ban-etsu West, Hakushin, Uetsu Main and Yonesaka Lines, often coupled with KiHa 100 series.

They were superseded by GV-E400 series, repainted green and reallocated to Tadami Line in 2020.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

All carriages are used on Tadami Line with very few on Ban-etsu West Line between Aizu-Wakamatsu and Nozawa.

Photo

It was not uncommon to see the KiHa E120 joined to the KiHa 100 series until 2020.
