History
The 383 series is a type of limited express train for Chuo Main Line, where tight curves and steep gradients had been a major obstacle to make trains faster. Unlike its predecessor 381 series, the tilting system of the 383 series is controlled by a computer, making trains safer, more comfortable and efficient. Two, four and six-carriage units were introduced to Limited Express Shinano (Nagoya - Nagano).
There are two types of front end, the one with and without a centre gangway. The 383 series can form up to ten coaches.
Current Operations & Future Prospects
The 383 series trains are mainly used on Limited Express Shinano. They are also used on Home Liner services connecting Nagoya and Tajimi, Mizunami or Nakatsugawa. JR Central plans to develop a new limited express train, replacing all 383 series by around 2031.
