History

Class DD200 is a type of diesel locomotive as shunter and for short-distance mainline use, replacing Classes DE10 and DE11. Unlike those old ones, the Class DD200 is electric-diesel locomotive. JR Freight has been introducing Class HD300 hybrid-diesel locomotives, but they are so expensive that the company uses the DD200 on mainline freight trains.

Not only JR Freight, but JR Kyushu and other freight railway companies introduce DD200s as well, as described below.

Current Operations & Future Prospects

JR Freight has 26 locos, and uses them in Sendai, Niigata, Toyama and Kokura (Kitakyushu) areas. The company also uses them for ad hoc works in Kanagawa Prefecture (Yokohama area).

JR Kyushu has one. It is painted black and used for shunting and ad hoc engineering work. The company plans to introduce more by financial year 2024.

Keiyo Rinkai Railway (Chiba Prefecture) and Mizushima Rinkai Railway (Okayama Prefecture) have one, respectively. Keiyo's loco is named RED MARINE.
